Add Comments as Annotations

The DXF or DWG format does not natively support comments on objects — except for points (Export settings for DXF / DWG format). Want to attach comments to other objects and include them when exporting to DWG? Use annotations as a workaround.

Why use annotations?

Annotations offer several benefits:

  • You control the position and formatting

  • You can add a leader arrow pointing to the related object

  • The content updates automatically

  • Annotations are supported in DXF/DWG export

STEPS

1. Set the correct formatting for comment annotations:

Go to Default Attributes

In Default Attributes click on Change default attributes for new annotations

In the window Default Attributes:

  • Next to Tool choose Comment from the dropdown
  • Adjust the properties using the 3 menu-buttons according to your needs

Optional: Click on Save current set of attributes to add this to your Default Attributes.

2. Add annotations with comments to your objects:

  • Optionally, create a dedicated layer (e.g. Comment Annotations) and activate it

  • Select the lines or objects you want to attach comments to

  • Activate the Comment-annotation tool. Is the correct annotation type not active? Right-click on the tool and choose the desired annotation. That one will now stay as the default.

RESULT

The comment annotations can now be included in the DXF/DWG export. This keeps your drawing organised and ensures no valuable information is lost.
