How to import a Coordinate List

Importing a coordinate list lets you bring survey data from external sources, such as total stations or GPS, directly into your drawing. Each record in the list becomes a point with coordinates, codes. Coordinate lists are ideal for importing large point datasets quickly.

If your data uses WGS84 GPS coordinates (latitude/longitude), see Import a coordinate list with WGS84 coordinates.

For coordinate lists containing coded measurements that should automatically generate geometry (lines, symbols), use Import > Data Collector instead, see Importing fielddata with codes (Data Collector)

STEPS

Prepare the Coordinate File

  1. Make sure your coordinate list is a text file (TXT, CSV, or similar).

  2. The file must contain at least point number and coordinates in one of these formats:

    • <Nr> <X> <Y> (Code)

    • <Nr> <X> <Y> <Z> (Code)

    • <Nr> <X> <Y> <Z> IH RH (Code)

  3. Ensure separators are consistent (space, comma, or semicolon).

  4. Z-values are optional.

Import the Coordinate List

Note: Importing in page coordinates is not possible. The height (Z) is always relative to the origin of the chosen coordinate system.

  1. Create a new document or open an existing project.

  2. Go to File > Import > Coordinate List.

  3. In the Import dialog:

    • Confirm the Coordinate System (Local or another system).

    • Choose the correct CS type (commonly XYZ – NEZ (Rectangular)).

    • Select the proper Format (e.g. Nr X Y Z (code)).Select the coordinate system type and file format before importing.

  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Import Coordinate List window, browse to your file.
  6. Select the file and click Open.
  7. The points are placed into your drawing according to the selected coordinate system.

Display Imported Points

If the points are not visible, first select all objects:

  1. Go to Selection > Select All Object Types, or press Ctrl + A.

  2. Then click the Zoom to fit selected objects in the window icon on the toolbar.

All imported points will now be centered and visible in your workspace.

Use the Control Panel to check the coordinates and codes of any selected point.

Verify Imported Data

  1. Go to View > Reports > Coordinate List to see all imported points with coordinates and comments.

  2. Alternatively, open View > Reports > Object List for a similar overview of point data.

RESULT

Your coordinate list is successfully imported, all points are visible, and the data has been verified. The imported points are now ready for further use in line creation, surface modeling, or coding-based processing in Pythagoras.
