Create and Edit a Path

A path is a drawing object used to define a route consisting of a sequence of points, lines, and arcs. Paths can be used for stationing, profile calculations, and other operations along a route.

Create a Path

Use Create Path to define a route by selecting points, lines, and/or arcs in the desired order.

  1. Open the Create toolbar.

  2. Click Create Path (the icon with the letter P).

  3. Click in the drawing to define the first point of the path.

  4. Click subsequent points or existing lines to extend the path.

    • Double-click an existing line to automatically follow the connected geometry until a junction or the end of the route is reached.

    • At a junction, double-click the line you want the path to follow. Pythagoras continues along the connected geometry until the next junction or the end of the route.

  5. Finish creating the path in one of the following ways:

    • Click the first point to close the path.

    • Press Enter to finish the path.

While creating a path, you can also:

  • Press Delete to remove the last element.

  • Press Esc to discard the path and cancel the operation.

Edit Points in an Existing Path

You can modify a path in two ways:

  • By editing the underlying geometry: Modify a point, line, or arc used by the path. The path automatically updates to reflect the changes.

  • Using Tools > Edit Path: Add, remove, or move points within the path without modifying the original geometry.

Select the path and go to Tools > Edit Path. The following commands are available:

  • Move Point: Move a point within the path.

  • Add Point: Add a new point to the path.

  • Remove Point: Remove a point from the path.

TIP: Hold down X while clicking to select a path specifically when multiple objects overlap.

Edit Path Properties

Double-click an existing path to open the Edit Object dialog.

On the Path tab, you can modify the following properties:

  • Line appearance: Line style, line arrows, line width, and color.

  • First Station: Set the starting value for stationing along the path.

  • Other properties: Layer, comment, and Display level.

The Info tab displays information such as the path Length, Slope length, elevation difference (dZ), Raise (%) (slope), and Number of element. It also provides an overview of the points and elements that make up the path.

Since Pythagoras 2025, paths can be displayed directly using their own line style, without the need to draw additional lines.
